Lake Norman

Lake Norman is the largest of the lakes of th Catawba River Chain with over 520 miles of shoreline and a total surface area of over 32,400 acres.  There is over 52 miles of shoreline in Lincoln County alone, stretching from Cowans Ford Dam at marker one to Little Creek, near the mouth of Mountain Creek.  The lake is patrolled by several law enforcement agencies including the North Carolina Resources Commission, Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Catawba County Sheriff's Department, Iredell County Sheriff's Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Corneilus Police Department, and Davidson Police Department all of whom have enforcement jurisdiction on the entire lake due to a mutual aid agreement between each of the respective counties.  The water of Lake Norman is used to provide power to the residents of the surrounding areas as well as a water supply for Lincoln County, Davidson, Mooresville, Charlotte, and Huntersville.  There are more registered boats on Lake Norman than any other lake in the state of North Carolina.

Mountain Island Lake

Mountain Island Lake was built in 1924 with the construction of the Mountain Island Hydroelectic Station.  It has approximately 61 miles of shoreline with a total surface area of over 3,200 acres.  This lake supplies water for the cities of Mount Holly, Gastonia, and Charlotte.  This lake is aptrolled by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, Gaston County Police Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, as well as the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
