Woman Dies in Apartment Fire in Lincoln County

Lincolnton, NC – A fire in a local apartment complex took the life of a woman who resided in one of the apartments.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and fire departments from Boger City, Lincolnton and North 321 were dispatched to the structure fire around 7:30 p.m. on Monday night.

Boger City fire fighters pulled the body from the apartment and the woman was already deceased.  The body was found lying on the floor about 15 feet from the entrance.  Firemen extinguished a small fire in the corner of a room where the bed was located.  Fire officials stated the fire is believed to have started on the bed where several cigarette butts were located.

Following the notification of the next of kin the woman was identified as Melinda Holt Thomas, 65, of 963 Bailey Springs Drive, Lincolnton, NC.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Former Home Health Care Nurse Charged with Unauthorized Use of Credit Card

Lincolnton, NC – A former home health care nurse has been charged with using an elderly victim’s credit card for months after she was terminated.

 

Detective Richard Calhoun charged Carly Buchanan Thorpe, 36, of 8493 Unity Church Road, Denver, NC with three counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses.

 

Ms. Thorpe had been the home health nurse for an 89 year old patient and authorized to make purchases on the patient’s credit card until she was terminated in November 2014 when the patient moved in with her daughter in Georgia.  The daughter asked the bank in January 2015 to remove Ms. Thorpe as an authorized user but the bank failed to do so. 

 

The suspect continued to make purchases totaling $3,108.07 between January 2015 and April 2015 until the daughter cancelled the credit card.

 

Thorpe was arrested on April 14, 2015 and released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

New Rules When Applying for Gun Permits

 

 

  • Applications for pistol purchase permits may be submitted in person at the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office with payment of the $5.00 fee per permit.  There is no limit on the amount of permits that can be purchased.  There is no limit on the number of gun permits that can be purchase at one time.

 

  • The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, as a convenience and courtesy to the public, is also accepting on-line applications submitted through a private company's on-line application procedure. This option is strictly VOLUNTARY and any handling fee is between the company and the applicant.

 

  • The $5.00 fee is payable for each pistol permit application received.
