Lincoln County Sheriff’s “Officers of the Year for 2017” Awards Announced

Lincolnton, NC – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement officers of the year awards were presented Wednesday night to a dedicated detention officer and a patrol sergeant.

 

The seventh annual “Sergeant John H. Howell II Memorial Deputy Sheriff of the Year” award went to Sergeant Steve Dombrowski. Sergeant Dombrowski, a 21-year law enforcement veteran, began his career with the Dare County, NC Sheriff’s Office in 1996. He later worked for the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and Cherryville Police Department before coming to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office in December of 2000.  He attained the rank of Sergeant in 2003 and held that position until February of 2010 when he was promoted to Criminal Investigations. In 2013 Sgt. Dombrowski transferred back to the Patrol Division.  He was promoted to his current rank of Sergeant in December of 2014. 

In presenting the award, Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter cited Dombrowski for his strong leadership skills, his professional demeanor and his dedication.

 

The Sgt. John H. Howell II Memorial Deputy of the Year award was started in 2011 to honor the life of Sgt. Howell who was shot and killed in the line of duty on August 26, 1973. Past winners of award are Lt. Jordan Cody, Deputy Daniel Richard, former Investigator Martin Hill, Capt. Tim Johnson, Investigator Frank Runyon and Civil Officer Todd Briggs.

 

The seventh annual “First Sergeant Thomas R. Taylor Detention Officer of the Year” award was presented to Detention Officer Randy McKee. Officer McKee began his law enforcement career in 2011 with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.  In 2013 McKee joined the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office where he currently serves as Detention/Deputy Sheriff Transport Officer.  His job responsibilities require him to travel to all areas of North Carolina transporting offenders and mental patients to other facilities.

Sheriff Carpenter cited McKee for his positive attitude, strong work ethic, and great character in performing his duties with the detention center.

 

The “First Sergeant Thomas R. Taylor Detention Officer of the Year” award was started in 2011 to honor the life of First Sergeant Tom Taylor who died on December 30, 2003 while on duty.  Past winners of the award are First Sergeant Veda Reid, Sgt. Charlie Greene, Officers Jason Harris, Andrew Mocilan, Donna Beal and Robert Hooks, Jr.

The officers of the year awards are presented for outstanding achievement that brings credit to the Sheriff’s Office and involves performance well above that which is required by the officer’s normal assignments. Permanent plaques are displayed in the lobby of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office showing each annual recipient of the award.
